Becoming a volunteer

Working days are held at the museum on Wednesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays. The tasks undertaken on work days typically include:

  • Track work
  • Woodwork and metalwork
  • Repair of rolling stock and buildings
  • Gardening
  • Museum site maintenance and clean up

All skill levels are welcome; if you’re willing to get stuck in, there’s plenty to do! Old clothes or overalls are recommended, steel-toed boots are a requirement. A Hi-Vis vest is also recommended, but this can be provided to you.

If you’d like to volunteer on a work day, email your interest to trains@canberrarail.org.au.

Volunteering on public open days

Canberra Railway Museum is open every Sunday, 10am-3pm. The Museum will now also be open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, 10am-3pm during school holidays and Floriade. The museum is also open public holidays . Volunteer tour guides are most welcome and in short supply! Guides will be provided with comprehensive information regarding our collection- you don’t have to be an expert already to be a guide! If you would like to volunteer as a tour guide, email your interest to trains@canberrarail.org.au.
